Course Overview

Workers with this qualification have tradesperson-level skills in the manufacture and/or installation of products, including furniture and cabinetry, made from timber and other materials.

They have core skills in tool use, measuring, drawing (including computer-aided design), interpreting work documentation, preparing cutting lists, communication, teamwork, and safe and environmentally sustainable work practices.

They may have specialised skills in wood machining, cabinet and furniture making, kitchen and bathroom construction and installation, marine cabinetry, coopering or drafting.

Work is in a defined range of skilled operations, usually within a range of broader activities involving established routines, methods and procedures, where some discretion and judgement is required in the selection of equipment, services or contingency measures. Individuals collaborate with others to achieve quality outcomes and take responsibility for their own work. They may have some limited responsibility for the work of others.

Kitchen and bathroom installers must be licensed in some states, and induction training is required for those working on construction sites.

  • Duration: 52 weeks (48 study weeks + 4 weeks holidays)
  • Classroom Training: 20 hours/week

1. Age and Education:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Completion of the equivalent of Year 12 education is mandatory.

2. Course Entry Interview and LLN Assessment:

  • Participation in a course entry interview is necessary to assess your suitability for the course and determine your specific student needs.
  • The interview will also include a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment.
  • To be eligible for entry, you must achieve an Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) level of 4 in reading, writing, numeracy, and oral communication.

3. English Language Proficiency:

  • An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6 or equivalent is required.
  • Test results must be no more than 2 years old.
  • Alternatively, English language competence can be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:
    • Education for a minimum of 5 years in an English-speaking country.
    • Completion of at least 6 months of a Certificate IV level course at an Australian Registered Training Organization (RTO).
    • Successful completion of an English Placement Test.
  • Other English language tests such as PTE and TOEFL may be accepted, provided the results are equivalent to IELTS 6. You are required to provide your test results for verification.

4. Academic Requirement:

  • Satisfactory completion of studies in applicant’s home country equivalent to an Australian Year 12 qualification

  • Successful completion of a qualification from an Institute where the mode of instruction was English and where the course duration was no less than 12 months
  • Completion of unit “CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement”

5. Health Requirement:

Upon enrolling with Ashford College, it is requested that student should disclose if they have any medical conditions as there may be contraindications to the course requirements. You will be asked to provide a certificate of fitness from your GP, clearing you and allowing you to participate in classes.
